THE SHANNON RIVER AND REGION
Extending from the midlands to the Atlantic Ocean and covering counties Clare, Limerick, North Tipperary and South Offaly, the Shannon Region offers a wonderful holiday experience. It lies in the heart of the beautiful west of Ireland and in this relatively compact area, dominated by water, one will find the full spectrum of fishing challenge.
The River Shannon is, at 386 km (240 miles), the longest river in Ireland. It divides the west of Ireland (principally the province of Connacht) from the east and south (Leinster and most of Munster). County Clare, being west of the Shannon but part of the province of Munster, is the major exception.
The Shannon Region covers a large coarse, game and sea fishing area with also many lakes and smaller rivers to discover. The Atlantic Sea coast and the sheltered waters of the Shannon Estuary offer excellent sea fishing from the shore and at sea. The River Shannon, which flows through the region's heartland, it's great lake "LOUGH DERG", it's many tributaries and the many lakes, so called East Clare Lakes, dotted throughout Clare present lots of exciting fishing options.
